I.              CALL TO ORDER:

The chair called the meeting to order at 7:40 p.m.

IV.          STUDENT ADVISORY: 

BUTLER ELEMENTARY

A.    The Holiday Concert on 12/14 was a great success and another performance will be held on 12/22 for the entire student body at 9:30 am.

B.    The Student Council led an assembly on Friday, 12/10 to kick off the new incentive program.  Mr. Michael McNeely from Horace Mann joined us and has generously donated two bikes to be given away at the end of the school year assembly.

C.   Everyone is looking forward to the upcoming vacation.

 

AMHS

A.    Meeting on 12/21 for families wishing to host students from China.

B.    A new teacher is joining the staff part-time, Ric Bigelli, as a result of the STRIDE Grant through North River Collaborative.

C.   A new student teacher is also joining the staff, Melinda Gadless Sheedy, in the library.

D.   The Talent Show is 12/21 at 12:30 pm for the student body.

 

Note:  Mr. LeGrice attended the Butler Christmas Concert and was very pleased to see the integration of technology and band along with the chorus.  Great job.

 

V.            INFORMATION: 

The Superintendent started off wishing the board and their families a Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday season and offered cookies (made by the Life Skills class) and eggnog.

 

A.    FYI: date for submission of the School Department’s operating budget is January 14, 2011 to the Town Hall. 

B.    FYI: the annual town meeting election calendar for 2011 and offices for re-election was distributed.

C.   FYI: notification from AFSCME Council 93 looking to enter into negotiations for the purpose of extending the agreement.

D.   FYI: a notice from the Avon Education Association to commence negotiations for a successor contract.

E.    A letter from the president of the AEA, Donna Conrad, regarding the IJNDD policy.   

F.    Horace Mann has donated two children’s bikes as incentive for the Butler’s 3R’s Program.  The contest will run until the end of the school year and the give away will take place at an assembly.

G.   AMHS will be hosting students from China for the second year in a row.  Ten students will be hosted by Avon families and will attend the high school.  The program is from 1/29-2/4/10.

H.   Retirement – Patty Buccella, Paraprofessional at the Butler Elementary, last day 12/24/10.  She will be missed…long-term employee.  Best wishes going forward and “thank you” for her many years of service.

 

VI.          FINANCIAL:

None at this time.

A.    Upon the Superintendent’s recommendation to refer the AFSCME agreement to Personnel Subcommittee; moved by Member Nolan, seconded by Member Martineau; Vote – Unanimous

            B.  Upon the Superintendent’s recommendation to refer the Agreement between the Avon

     Education Association and the Avon School Committee to the Personnel Subcommittee;  

     moved by Member Nolan, seconded by Member Martineau; Vote – Unanimous

b.    Budget FY12 – Motion by Secretary Martineau, seconded by Member Marinelli for Superintendent Frieswyk to submit to Town Hall the school committee approved budget request of $6,115,260 for FY12 to be submitted to Board of Selectmen by 01/14/11.
