Local Scholarships 2007

NEWS RELEASE

Marilyn Malcolmson, counselor at Avon High School and chairperson of the 2007 local competition, has announced that many scholarships are available to students this year. Proof of acceptance at a post-secondary institution will be required prior to receipt of scholarships.

Key dates in this year's scholarship program are outlined below:

March 12 Information packets on all scholarships, instructions, and applications given to seniors

March 30 Completed applications returned to Marilyn Malcolmson from seniors

April 13 Lists of candidates, applications, transcripts, and winner forms sent to individual scholarship committees

May 11 Scholarship committees notify Marilyn Malcolmson of winners for graduation presentation

May 25 Benefactors will be notified of winners' names and colleges

June 2 Graduation and presentation of scholarships.

NAME: Mabel H. Alexander Scholarship

AWARD: One (1) at $500

OPEN TO: Avon High seniors residing in Avon

CRITERIA: Planning to pursue a career in education – preference given to special education and/or child development

NAME: Avon Boosters Association Awards

AWARD: Three (3) at $400 each

OPEN TO: All Avon High seniors

CRITERIA: a. Minimum three-year attendance at Avon Middle-High School

b. Plan to attend college immediately after graduation

c. Demonstrated school spirit and community involvement

NAME: Avon Co-Operative Bank Scholarships

AWARD: Three (3) at $1,000 each

OPEN TO: All Avon High seniors

CRITERIA: a. Academic achievement

b. Financial need

c. Full-time enrollment in a four year program at an accredited college or university

NAME: Avon Education Association Scholarships

AWARD: Two (2) at $300 each

OPEN TO: All Avon High seniors

CRITERIA: a. Preference given to those pursuing a career in education

b. Academic achievement

NAME: Avon Youth Little League Baseball/Softball Scholarships

AWARD: Two (2) at $100 each

OPEN TO: All Avon High seniors

Avon residents attending other schools

CRITERIA: a. Participated in Avon Youth Baseball/Softball for a minimum of three years

b. Essay required - topic: "What I have learned from playing baseball (or softball) in Avon Little League"

NAME: Cornelius D. Buckley K of C Scholarship

AWARD: One (1) at $200 (payable in Sept.)

OPEN TO: Avon High seniors residing in Avon

CRITERIA: Planning to pursue a career in the medical field or planning to pursue a career teaching handicapped children, or a
handicapped senior.

NAME: Butler School/Avon Schools Association Scholarship

AWARD: One (1) at $500

OPEN TO: All Avon High seniors

CRITERIA: a. Academic achievement

b. Financial need

c. Must have attended the Butler School for a minimum of one full school year

d. Essay required. Topic: “Which teacher or administrator had the greatest impact on your educational experience in
the Avon Public School System?” Discuss how this person has influenced your future goals.

8. NAME: Agnes G. Chapman Memorial Award

AWARD: One (1) at $200

OPEN TO: All Avon High seniors

CRITERIA: a. Academic achievement

b. Service to school, family, and community

c. Participation in extracurricular activities

d. Financial need

NAME: Edward V. Connolly Memorial Scholarship

AWARD: One (1) at $2,000 or Two (2) at $1,000 each

OPEN TO: Avon High seniors residing in Avon

Avon residents attending other schools

CRITERIA: a. Participation in athletics

b. Academic achievement

NAME: Charles H. Francis Memorial Scholarship

AWARD: One (1) at $250

AWARD: One (1) at $500

CRITERIA: Preference given to a student who has provided service to school/community and:

A. is planning to major in a vocational or technology related field

B. has exhibited a positive attitude and performance in applied arts classes

C. has coped positively with a physical handicap or some other kind of adversity

22. NAME: Rev. James T. Smith K of C Scholarship

AWARD: One (1) at $200

NAME: Charles Strafello Memorial Scholarship Sponsored by the Avon V.F.W. Noyes Post

AWARD: One (1) at $300

OPEN TO: Avon High seniors residing in Avon
Avon residents attending other high schools

CRITERIA: a. Financial need

b. Academic achievement

Randolph Lodge of Elks #2130 Scholarship

A separate application is required to apply for this scholarship. See Mrs. Sass.

Additional requirements are as follows:

1. Two references from responsible persons not related to you.

2. A letter of recommendation covering character, personality, and scholarship from one to three teachers/administrators.

3. An official transcript, including SAT scores (guidance will do this).

4. A letter of not more than 200 words from a parent or guardian giving an outline of the family situation and financial need.

5. An essay of not more than 300 words written by you, summarizing school and out of school accomplishments, and stating your goals for further
education.

6. All applicants must use the ELKS application form when applying. No other application will be accepted.

7. The committee will reject incomplete applications.

Return all required materials to Mrs. Sass no later than Friday, March 30.
