Avon Middle High School Library - Avon, MA

7th Grade:
Information Literacy Class

"Ultimately, information literate people are those who have learned how to learn. They know how to learn because they know how knowledge is organized, how to find information, and how to use information in such a way that others can learn from them. They are people prepared for lifelong learning, because they can always find the information needed for any task or decision at hand.”
American Library Association Presidential Committee on Information Literacy (January 10, 1989, Washington, D.C.)

Nine Minute Youtube Video called  e-literate explaining why we offer this class.

This information Literacy Class uses the  Big6 c. (Eisenberg and Berkowitz) information processing model.
Our  Information Literacy Curriculum Guidelines are based on the MSLA 2008  Massachusetts Recommended PreK-12 Information Literacy Standards 85 page DRAFT document   (Not yet approved by the MSLA Executive board)  Abridged STANDARDS: Intro, Benchmarks, References;   and the American Association of School Librarians Standards for the 21st Century Learner.   as well as skills adapted from the National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) for Students

The class uses ILILE (The Institute for Library and Information Literacy Education) checklists to gauge skill competency in conjunction with the T.R.A.I.L.S. assessments (both grade 3 and grade 6 assessments are used)

http://moodle.sandi.net/course/view.php?id=8843

This one semester class combines information literacy competencies and  basic library skills needed for success in middle school and beyond..  It is a class where students learn how to find, evaluate and use information. We hope our students will learn to think critically, develop problem solving skills,  as well as develop their communication and presentation skills.

The mission of Avon Middle High School is to create an atmosphere that encourages intellectual pursuit where teachers employ a variety of teaching strategies to meet the diverse needs of our students.  Our aim is to prepare students to be self-directed, inquisitive learners.  We encourage collaboration among teachers, students, and the community in order to develop students who are life-long learners and productive, responsible citizens of a global society.

This class should help our students begin their journey in becoming, "self-directed, inquisitive learners. "

Learning style wrap-up & Learning style Candy Quiz

Mrs. London got so excited with the Candy Quiz that she neglected to distribute the homework.  You can find it online here:

 http://www.braingle.com/brainteasers/teaser.php?id=23679&op=0&comm=1#c

The physical worksheet can be found here:

(You'll notice that there is no space for a name.  This is to help you get in the habit of taking initiative and putting your name  on things even though it is not specifically asked for.  It is also about reading directions.  Those people who took the time to read this will be successful and earn extra points for name)

The worksheet is due on Friday.  (This will help you practice long term assignments)

Are you puzzled by this type of puzzle?  Here is a tutorial

Mrs. London is treating you like grownup seventh graders.  There will be nothing physical to hand in tomorrow.  However, tomorrow if you are clueless when it comes to alphabetizing  fiction books and putting nonfiction books in numerical order,  Mrs. London will guess that you hadn't done your homework.

* Struggling students please have a parent or guardian send an email to Mrs. London telling her that you've spent at least 20 minutes practicing these basic skills.  plondon@avon.k12.ma.us

Please learn to spell the word because.  (Why?  Because I say so!)

Because is one of the top 25 misspelled words for 1st grade through 8th grade. It seems this word continues to give students difficulty. Maybe this silly sentence will help:

Betty                Eats               Cake                    And                 Uses                     Six                        Eggs

B E C A U S E
